The Super Bowl

The super bowl is coming up soon and it will once again drive people nuts.

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League played between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. It i played on the first Sunday of February and has been in existence since 1967. This years Super Bowl is the 52 version of the game played between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.

Not sure if I have to do this
  • Was Buggin' Out right to ask for black people on the wall?
  • Was Sal right in dismissing the question?
  • Why does Radio Raheem play the song during a particular scene?
  • Was Buggin' Out right to chase down Clifton?
  • Was Da Mayor right to argue with the Korean Clerk?
  • Was Buggin' Out right to try and organize a petition?
  • Was Da Mayor right in questioning how Louise raises her son?
  • Was Mookie right to warn jade away from Sal>
  • Was Sal right to smash Radio Raheem's box?
  • Was Mookie right to go and demand his money?
The script seems to say that you should always do the right thing. However it also shows that the right thing to do is different according to different individuals. Just looking at the neighborhood the script is set in you can see clear evidence of this fact. For example Buggin' Out believes that since black people make up the majority of the pizzeria's customers it is only right for Sal to have black icons up on the wall. Sal however believes that since he owns the pizzeria it is only right for him to put whoever he wants up there. The script seems to say that the "right thing" to do is up to the individual in question since everyone has different definitions.

Do the Right Thing
The movie is the story of the events that occur in a single neighborhood over the course of one day. Though the time period is sort it examines several different themes that were prevalent in the 1980’s of the time. The film examined everything from respect, to  tension, and what the “right thing” is.

The film seemed to examine a lot about respect and who it was given. During the scene when the fire hydrant is opened up and spilled out on to the street to very different things happened. When Radio Raheem walked by all he did was wait and look and the water from the hydrant was blocked for him allowing him to walk by and stay drive. However when the man in the car drove by and yelled to make sure they didn’t get his car wet they made sure to douse his car. They didn’t respect the man so they let his car get doused.  Tension is also a big theme in the film with many examples. The most obvious is the racial slurs montage that delivers all the different insults from different ethnic groups. Some other examples are when Pino bemoans the fact he has to work at the pizzeria and they are lucky they haven’t’ been killed. Another is when the Corner Men bemoan the fact that the Koreans came into their neighborhood.  Lastly the film’s title says it all in that it tells you to do the right thing. However in the film it never makes clear what the right thing is. Da’ Mayor goes around telling different individuals to do the right thing but never comes out and says what the right thing is. Those are some of the themes in the film.
